What It Takes to Be a Licensed Massage Therapist in Kansas City

These licenses and standards are required by both the City of Kansas City and the State of Missouri to legally provide massage.

Required Licenses:

• City of Kansas City Business License – Required for any business operating within city limits, including zoning clearance and annual renewal.

• Missouri Massage Therapy Business License – A separate state-level business license specifically for massage services, required in addition to the general city business license.

• Missouri Massage Therapist License – Required for each individual providing massage, ensuring they’ve met state standards in training, testing, and background checks.

Missouri-State Therapist Requirements

• Education: At least 625 clock hours of supervised instruction (minimums include ~300 hours of massage theory & techniques, ~100 hours of anatomy & physiology, ~50 hours of business ethics/law, ~50 hours of ancillary therapies like CPR/first aid)

• Exam: Passing a recognized exam, such as MBLEx, NCETMB, ABT, or AMMA NBCE.

• Background Check: Fingerprint-based criminal background screening from both Missouri State Highway Patrol and the FBI.

• Continuing Education & Renewals: License renewal requires continuing education evidence, which must be kept on record for at least four years. Additional requirements include timely renewal and notifying the board of any changes in personal information.
